The
Service Body is an incredibly useful body and that is good reason there
are so many in use today. Basically, it is a bunch of closets mounted
on the back of your truck. Of course, you know, we all love closets and
we have a tendency to fill them up with all kinds of stuff. This is what
a Service Body is for--to carry parts, tools, large items, small items.
Service Bodies come in a wide range of sizes from 6.5' long to
16' and many different heights and compartment depths, different top
designs (open top to put small parts in and closed top to mount
generators and compressors or cranes on). They started as a pickup with
some tool boxes bolted to the pickup bed, then became a separate body
and now has a huge number of variations from steel to aluminum to
fiberglass. The most common is the 8' Service Body mounted on a chassis
that would normally have an 8' pickup bed on it. It is such a useful
truck. People who need more space will move into the 9' or 11'. Longer
ones are more rare, but the more storage you need, the Service Body can
take care of it nicely.
